Helping Improve HSSE Performance at Leading Energy Company
An eLearning solution to spread awareness and educate the employees about safety measures to prevent and reduce HSSE incidents.
The Client
British Gas India Pvt. Ltd., also known as BG India, is a subsidiary of BG Group Plc. The company operates in exploration, production and distribution of natural gas. The organization, which is also involved in transmission of piped natural gas, has offshore, shore base and marine gas exploration and production facilities to meet the consumers’ energy needs.
The Requirement
British Gas India has an effective policy to prevent the HSSE incidents that may endanger the health, safety and security of the employees and the incidents that may affect the environment. To ensure compliance and optimal HSSE behavior, the company provides direction, training, education and support to the employees. To meet the goal of zero injuries and to improve the performance of HSSE further, the organization decided to opt for an eLearning solution. The eLearning solution was to help reduce the number of incidents and the environmental emissions and impact by educating the employees about HSSE policies in an engaging manner.
The Challenge
- Understand the client’s work environment—offshore, shore base and marine drills and production facilities.
- Analyze the organization’s HSSE policy: Subject matter was highly technical.
- Localizing the eLearning program: The course was to be made in different languages to meet the target audience’s requirements.
The Solution
- Location-based Design: The eLearning course consisted of a number of modules that educated learners about HSSE policies based on the location they worked in, that is, marine, shore base or offshore. In addition, an individual offline assessment module was developed that helped client assess the performance of each learner. Upon successfully passing the assessment, learners were issued a ‘passport’ that certified them with HSSE compliance.
- Custom Illustrations and Animations: Custom illustrations were developed including animations with rich graphics to present the content in an engaging way. This was vital, considering the nature of the content, which was highly technical.
- Localization: To customize the course according to the target audience’s profile, language localization was achieved.
- Activities: An activity was designed which required learners to identify the safety hazards from a scenario presented to them. Heavy illustration was done for this activity to provide learners an experience very close to their work environment.
