A highly engaging eLearning course for HDFC Bank


An eLearning program with a blend of scenario-based learning and gamified learning to introduce the employees to the bank’s Code of Conduct.

The Client

HDFC Bank is one of the most valuable banks in India with a market capitalization of US$ 43 billion. The bank serves more than 32 million customers through the network of 4000 branches spanning across 2,500 towns and cities. The organization has been featured in Forbes’s Fab 50 list of Asia-Pacific’s best big publicly traded companies the most number of times. The bank offers a wide range of banking and financial services including retail and commercial banking, treasury options and wholesale banking.

The Requirement

Being one of the leading banks in India, HDFC is renowned for customer friendly practices. These practices are nurtured by employees that are guided by the bank’s Code of Conduct. This code ensures that the employees follow the best practices at work leading to professional integrity, operational excellence, regulatory and statutory compliance, and superior services for customers.

While the code was in practice and complied by the employees, the organization was looking for a solution that would educate the new hires about the code and serve as a refresher for the existing employees. This prompted HDFC to seek SKILLDOM’s services.

The client wanted an eLearning solution that would:

  •   Explain the code of conduct to the target audience in an engaging way
  •   Help the bank staff identify the right course of action to be taken to deal with real-life situations based on the code of conduct

The Challenge

HDFC provided SKILLDOM the code of conduct and other policy documents. However, documents such as code of conduct have an unfortunate reputation of being a bit dull. Moreover, the language tends to be legal, given the nature of subject. Therefore, the challenge was to:

  •   Understand the Code of Conduct
  •   Analyze the policies and practices that the employees follow
  •   Identify the situations that may lead to breach of code

The Solution

SKILLDOM design team proposed an innovative solution that was a blend of game-based learning and scenario-based learning approach. The solution converted the dull content into an engaging eLearning course. The key features of this custom learning solution were:

  •   Gamified Learning Approach: The course was built around a story that was a day-in-the-life of an employee. The story had various sequences such as driving to work, reaching office, interacting with colleagues and customers, and answering mails among others. Each sequence of the story was linked to the other with a highly interactive game that presented different scenarios to the learners.
  •   Real-life Scenarios: A number of scenarios were devised for each game. These scenarios represented real-life situations that the bank employees face that may lead to breach of the code. Each scenario was presented with options, requiring the learners to select the best course of action for a scenario according to the code of conduct. This approach not only educated the bank employees about the code but also provided a quality learning experience.
  •   High Level of Customization: The course was highly customized to the course theme. SKILLDOM designed various game themes and a number of templates specifically for this eLearning program. Some of the key features were:
  •   Games: Different games such as Car Game, Access Card Game, and Elevator Game were designed. This required extensive photo sessions and illustrations.
  •   Scenario Templates: A number of scenario templates were designed for each game depending on its theme.

The Impact

The result was a highly interactive eLearning course that educated the employees about various codes in an engaging manner. This eLearning course:

  •   Reached out to the target audience effectively and helped them identify the situations that may lead to breach of the code.
  •   Provided them a definitive approach to deal with a number of workplace situations that may compromise the code.
  •   Provided a great learning experience as a result of highly engaging eLearning solution.
