Mid-term Review Strategy Game for the Aditya Birla Group


Highly immersive strategy-based game developed for a global conglomerate to highlight the significance of mid-term reviews and feedback exchange process.

The Client

Aditya Birla Group (ABG) is a global conglomerate with presence in more than 36 countries. The Fortune 500 Company with annual revenue of US $45 billion in 2014 has been ranked fourth in the world and first in Asia-Pacific in the ‘Top Companies for Leaders’ study. The organization operates across sectors such as Telecommunication, Finance, Trading, Cement, Textile, Chemicals, Agriculture, Power and Metals.

The Requirement

ABG has a robust human resources (HR) framework in place for employee reviews and appraisals. The company’s mid-term review process and the effective feedback exchange guidelines are an integral part of this framework. ABG realized that it was important to ensure that these two features were used by all the required employees in the intended way. This realization led to the company’s decision to opt for an eLearning solution.

The Challenge

From the outset, ABG was clear that this project shouldn’t be about creating a ‘regular’ eLearning solution. They wanted SKILLDOM to try something radically different. The challenge was to understand the complex HR framework in place at ABG. This involved conducting a detailed analysis of the inputs provided from the following perspectives:

  •   Helping managers understand the importance of knowing the strengths and weaknesses of every employee reporting to them
  •   Highlighting the significance of the mid-term review process and the effective feedback exchange guidelines

The Solution

Given the mandate shared by ABG, SKILLDOM decided to work on creating a highly engaging strategy-based game for the managers.

  •   Gamified Learning: Learners, who played the role of a prince, were required to ‘work’ with the game characters (each with a different power) to achieve the goal. To develop the game, SKILLDOM design team worked very closely with the technical team at every stage of the development. Most importantly, the game was tested on various platforms a number of times to ensure that the learners had the greatest gaming experience.
  •   The Strategy: To highlight the importance of mid-term review and feedback exchange, an activity was developed. This activity required learners to analyze the performance of the characters and provide them feedback after they had finished half the game. Based on the feedback provided, the characters’ performance changed in the second half.
  •   High-end Graphics: The most crucial part of the development was planning the visuals to do justice to the game. To provide the target audience an engaging learning experience, SKILLDOM not only embedded challenges in almost every step of the game but also painstakingly designed each character along with the multiple game environments.
  •   Key Features: Some of the key features were:
  •     Face the Challenges: Use characters that have different powers such as using swords, arrows, magical powers and catapult in order to defeat the enemies and clear each level.
  •     Beat the Clock: Take decisions in time and achieve the goal.
  •     Collect the Treasure: Not only defeat the enemies but also collect treasure to score bonus points.
  •     Audio Strategy: Extremely rich sound effects for each character action, challenges and different game elements in line with industry standards.

The Impact

The result was a custom eLearning solution that successfully engaged learners. The client, and more importantly the end-users, highly admired the gaming experience that they had. The benefits were:

  •   The strategy-based game with a compelling storyline and a plot that captivated learners
  •   The game strategy that put the learners in the driver’s seat to take decisions
  •   An immersive game with multiple levels and review and feedback sharing mechanism that brought home important points about mid-term review and feedback exchange
