A Localized and Engaging eLearning Solution for Kellogg India


A mandatory eLearning program to spread awareness about Environment Health and Safety processes among employees.

The Client

Founded in 1906, Kellogg Company is the world’s leading cereal company headquartered in the U.S. The organization having revenue of US$ 14.59 billion, manufactures a number of food products across 18 countries including in India. Having started India operations in 1995, Kellogg has become a household name with products for kids, adults and the entire family.

The Requirement

Kellogg, which is renowned for the quality and safety of products that the company offers, has manufacturing facilities at multiple locations in India. The organization has a strong workforce that helps manufacture these products. As an industry standard, Kellogg has a number of practices in place for Environment, Health and Safety (EHS), Crisis Management, Sanitation, Hygiene, and Quality. These practices ensure the quality and safety of products and provide a safe working environment for the employees. Kellogg had an instructor-led training program that guided employees on these policies and guidelines. To provide the target audience the ease and flexibility of learning at their own pace and to add to the existing training program, Kellogg decided to opt for an eLearning solution.

The Challenge

Kellogg provided SKILLDOM with a number of policy documents. This included PDFs, presentations, photographs, and designs that outlined safety procedures followed by employees. The challenge was to:

  •   Understand the practices and guidelines for the employees
  •   Analyze the level of policy awareness among the employees
  •   Understand the profile of target audience

A key input shared by the client was to develop an eLearning program that could relate to the personnel who work on the floor and operate in processes that require one to exercise caution.

The Solution

SKILLDOM design team proposed a custom eLearning solution. This solution would not only help the workers understand safety procedures but also provide a great learning experience. Some of the key features of this solution were:

  •   Thorough Animations: The workers were aware of the safety procedures; however, it was important to simplify the guidelines and procedures for them considering their educational level. To do so, SKILLDOM design team planned series of animations that explained each process in detail. These animations were rich in graphics and supported by audio to have maximum impact. To make sure that the workers enjoyed the training, the content was presented in a lighter manner with subtle humor that livened up the content and made the target audience feel at ease.
  •   Corncob as Mascot: In line with Kellogg’s key ingredient in one of the flagship product, ‘Corncob’ was used as a mascot. The mascot walked the learners through each process and became not only their instructor but also a friend throughout the course. In addition, the mascot explained the policies in a simple and jargon-free language. This approach helped alleviate the dullness generally associated with the subject of EHS.
  •   Visual Appeal: SKILLDOM designers presented different policies with an easy to understand graphics. Pictorial representation and illustrations integrated within animations aided the learning and simplified the processes for the workers. Moreover, it made the technically heavy content easy to grasp.
  •   Navigation: The course navigation was made easy with learners having complete control over the pace of the course. Various navigational features enabled learners to move across different parts of the animations and topics within the course.
  •   Localization: To have the maximum impact and to help the workers that comprised of local population understand the safety measures better; language localization was achieved.

The Impact

After the project was delivered, SKILLDOM received appreciation from the client for the innovative approach that succeeded in educating the target audience about safety procedures effectively. The benefits were:
