An eLearning program to enhance the English language skills of the employees of an Indian conglomerate.

The Client

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) having revenue of US$ 15 billion, is an Indian conglomerate serving key sectors such as Infrastructure, Hydrocarbon, Power, Process Industries, Defense and Information Technology. The company, which is renowned for offering state-of-the-art solutions in Technology, Engineering, Construction, Manufacturing and Financial Services space, serves customers in over 30 countries across the globe.

The Requirement

L&T, which is one of the largest companies in India, has employee strength of around 84,000. These employees work across number of sectors the company operates in. While the employees were trained and versed with English, the organization wanted them to meet the growing needs of the company’s increasing international clientele. This translated into the need for an eLearning program that would enhance the employee’s skills that are required in a corporate life. L&T was looking for an eLearning solution that would act as a catalyst to the company’s instructor-led training program and provide easy access to employees spread around the world.

The Challenge

L&T has more than 84,000 employees. These employees come from diverse background with respect to skills and region. The English language skills of these employees are most likely to be different from the others across levels. Considering this, the challenge was to:

  •   Understand the work culture of employees working in different sectors and make the content relevant to the job they do
  •   Understand the target audience and their role to arrive at the best way to provide English language training
  •   Make the basic content interactive and engaging for the adult learners

A key input shared by the client was to develop an eLearning program that could relate to the personnel who work on the floor and operate in processes that require one to exercise caution.

The Solution

  •   Understanding Learners: To provide the target audience a holistic learning experience, it was important to understand the learning needs of each employee and provide a training program based on the same. To do so, SKILLDOM devised a Capability Evaluation Diagnostic test. This adaptive test assessed employees on various English language skills from basic knowledge and comprehension to application in day-to-day workplace scenarios. Based on the test’s outcome, learners were recommended learning modules for the areas they needed to work on.
  •   Learning Levels: The course was spread across a number of modules across three key levels. The first level diagnosed the learners’ skills, second level helped them acquire the skills and the final level helped them apply the skills. The eLearning program was exhaustive and offered comprehensive English language skills spread across 50 eLearning modules.
  •   Engaging Learners: The course was built around a story which had two characters—the learner and the instructor. The instructor who was also the mascot guided the target audience throughout the course. Variations of teaching technology and adult learning pedagogy were used to provide learners an engaging learning experience. This included:
  •   Animations: A number of animations were designed with rich graphics that effectively engaged learners and educated them on key skills.
  •   Interactive Templates: A series of interactive templates were designed specifically for this eLearning course. This included templates and techniques designed to make learner identify different characteristics by coloring a word, typing the answers when required and comparing the output with a standard answer. The writing assessment were embedded to test learners on application of the their skills for writing reports, press releases, presentations, speeches, memorandums, notices, and a number of documents.
  •   Audio Assessments: Learners were also required to listen to the audio clips and practice the pronunciation, answer the questions, and write based on the audio presented to them.
  •   Multi-device Accessibility: The client required the eLearning solution to be accessible across devices. To meet this key requirement, the eLearning program was developed in HTML5. This approach provided employees the access to modules at their convenience.
  •   Offering Additional Services: Through the strong network the SKILLDOM has in the industry, SKILLDOM helped L&T identify the best SME in the industry to meet the requirements of this eLearning course.

The Impact

The result was a custom eLearning solution that not only helped the employees identify their learning needs but also met them effectively. The success of this program was:

  •   Essential skills were successfully imparted in the target audience with the help of an engaging course.
  •   The eLearning program effectively blended with the instructor-led training program and provided an enriching learning experience.
