Prevention of Sexual Harassment
An Effective and ‘Light’ eLearning Solution for HDFC Bank
An awareness program to educate and sensitize employees about the policies to prevent and redress sexual harassment incidents at workplace.
The Client
HDFC Bank is one of the most valuable banks in India with a market capitalization of US$ 43 billion. The bank serves more than 32 million customers through the network of 4000 branches spanning across 2,500 towns and cities. The organization has been featured in Forbes’s Fab 50 list of Asia-Pacific’s best big publicly traded companies the most number of times. The bank offers a wide range of banking and financial services including retail and commercial banking, treasury options and wholesale banking.
The Requirement
To address the concerns of working women, the Indian Parliament passed Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. This act required organizations across India to have a framework to address incidents of sexual harassment at workplace. HDFC Bank, which ensures utmost safety of the employees, had an existing framework to address such incidents. The new law provided an impetus to have an eLearning program that would spread the awareness of the measures the bank had along with the role the employees had to play to ensure a safe working environment. In line with this requirement, HDFC Bank approached SKILLDOM to provide an eLearning solution that would:
- Provide the bank staff an overview of measures to prevent sexual harassment at workplace
- Help the bank staff identify the behaviors that can be construed as sexual harassment
- Educate the employee’s about their responsibility for creating a sexual harassment-free workplace
The Challenge
HDFC provided SKILLDOM with high-level inputs that were to be included in the eLearning course. The challenge was to:
- Analyze the policy, and the changes and additions brought to it by the new law
- Understand the work environment at HDFC and the level of awareness about sexual harassment
- Considering the sensitive nature of the subject, present the content in a balanced way without compromising any of its aspect
Another challenge was to provide a ‘lighter’ course. As a standard policy to provide best services to customers, most of the Internet bandwidth is used for banking transactions across organizations. This leaves a limited bandwidth for other purposes such as training and recreation. Hence, HDFC wanted the course to be lighter and without audio. Therefore, considering the nature of the subject and the client’s request, it was a challenge to provide an engaging course without audio.
The Solution
SKILLDOM proposed a solution that would not only meet HDFC’s requirements but also provide learners a wholesome learning experience. The key features of the solution were:
- Scenario-driven Approach: The documents shared by the client had detailed policy and code the employees were to follow at the workplace to ensure a safe working environment. However, it was important to highlight the situations that may be construed as sexual harassment. Therefore, SKILLDOM design team deliberated and designed scenarios. Each scenario presented a story that educated learners about the actions that could be seen as harassment and the steps they needed to take to avoid such actions.
- Designing for the Learners: The scenarios mimicked real-life situations that could take place at a workplace. However, to make it a little palatable or digestive for users, SKILLDOM used two characters – Angel and Devil. These characters represented the good and the evil. Devil represented the ideas that one may fall prey to and the angel represented the policies that can help an employee avoid the situations leading to harassment and help keep the workplace safe. This approach ensured in providing a lighter and yet an engaging experience however with a strong message.
- Customizations: Several features were customized according to the policies and the learning approach. Some of the key elements of customization were:
- Menu: The menu was designed as a telephone dialer representing a hotline number which employees are usually provided to report harassment incidents.
- Buttons: The buttons that helped learners navigate across screens and stories were custom designed. These buttons not only helped move the story ahead but also kept the learners focused.
- Creative Visuals: Comic book approach to storytelling was employed wherein each character was sketched according to the story. This helped not only present content in an engaging manner without using the audio but also kept the package size within limits.
The Impact
Hundreds of bank employees were able to understand one of the most sensitive policy document in one of the most creative and engaging way. The key results that highlighted the success of this project were:
- An eLearning solution that was extremely well received by the users
- Highly impactful learning module that prompted HDFC Bank executives to suggest SKILLDOM to make this solution an off-the-shelf product.
- Highly popular program that has been customized for a number of companies in India
